How to File an FBAR Online in 2026: A Walkthrough of the BSA E-Filing System
FinCEN offers two routes for individuals, neither of which needs an account. Here is what each screen asks for, what you get back, and how to fix a report afterwards.

To file FBAR online in 2026 you use FinCEN's BSA E-Filing System, and as an individual you do not need an account: you choose either the online form or the downloadable PDF form, complete it, validate it, sign it electronically and submit. The 2025 report is due by October 15, 2026 under the automatic extension, and most people finish the filing itself in under an hour.
The form is not hard, but the system around it has a few quirks that catch first-timers: two routes that behave differently, a signing step with no PIN, and two separate reference numbers that arrive at different times. This walkthrough covers each screen in order, what you receive afterwards, and how to correct a report once it has gone.
Can you file an FBAR online in 2026 without registering?
Yes, if you are filing for yourself. FinCEN's BSA E-Filing System states that to file the FBAR as an individual you must personally or jointly own a reportable foreign financial account, and that there is no need to register to file the FBAR as an individual. FinCEN's guidance on how to file puts the same rule the other way round: institutions, including attorneys, CPAs and enrolled agents filing on behalf of a client, must register with the BSA E-Filing System and obtain a User ID and password.
That distinction matters if someone is helping you. A spouse or adviser cannot simply log in as you. Where an adviser files for you, they file as an institution using their own credentials, and where spouses file jointly, they use Form 114a, covered further down.
Online form or PDF: which route should you use?
FinCEN's individual filing page offers both, and describes them as follows.
| File Online FBAR | File PDF FBAR | |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe Reader | File Online FBARNot required | File PDF FBARRequired |
| How it is prepared | File Online FBAROnline form preparation | File PDF FBAROffline form preparation |
| Working pattern | File Online FBAROne-time submission, ready to file today | File PDF FBARWork at your own pace, save as you go and reuse the form |
| Suits | File Online FBARA straightforward filing you can finish in one sitting | File PDF FBARMany accounts, or a filing you will be interrupted during and repeat next year |
The reuse point is the one most people underestimate. Your account list changes little from year to year, so a saved PDF from last year is a head start on this year's report. Against that, the PDF route depends on Adobe Reader being set up correctly, which is where most technical complaints come from.
What you need before you open the form
Gather everything first, because neither route is enjoyable to pause halfway through. For each reportable account you need the name in which it is held, the account number, the name and address of the institution, the type of account, and its maximum value during 2025 converted to US dollars. You also need your own details, including your Social Security number or ITIN, or a foreign identification document if you have no US taxpayer identification number. Our guide to filing an FBAR for the first time sets out the full list and explains how maximum values and exchange rates work.
How to file an FBAR online in 2026, step by step
These steps follow FinCEN's own electronic filing instructions for the no-registration routes.
- Open the individual filing page on the BSA E-Filing System and choose either Prepare and Submit for the online form, or Prepare FBAR for the PDF route.
- Give the filing a name. The PDF form's first field is a Filing Name used to identify your report. FinCEN suggests something descriptive, along the lines of your surname plus the year, which helps if you later contact the help desk.
- Complete every required field. On the PDF the required fields are highlighted in yellow. This is where your filer details, then each account, are entered, split between accounts you own separately, accounts held jointly and accounts over which you have signature authority only.
- Validate. The Validate button checks for missing or incorrect entries and prompts you to fix them. When nothing is outstanding, FinCEN's instructions say the system tells you the form needs to be signed before it can be submitted.
- Sign the form. Clicking Sign the Form asks you to acknowledge that you are electronically signing the report. FinCEN's instructions state plainly that a PIN is not required for the signing process, which surprises people expecting something like the IRS e-file PIN.
- Save your copy. On the PDF route, save the signed form somewhere you can find again, such as your Documents folder or desktop, before uploading. FinCEN warns that some browsers default to a download folder that is awkward to navigate to at the upload step.
- Upload and submit. Ready to File takes you to the upload page, where you enter your email address, first name, last name and phone number, attach the saved report and submit. Those contact details exist so that the confirmation reaches you and the help desk can identify your filing.
- Check the confirmation. You should see an immediate confirmation screen with a tracking ID, and receive an email carrying the same information. Keep it.
Illustrative example: an American in Cardiff with four UK accounts chooses the online route on a Tuesday evening. She enters her details and the four accounts from a summary she prepared earlier, validates, signs, and submits in about forty minutes. The confirmation screen shows a tracking ID, which she saves as a PDF, and on Thursday an acknowledgement email arrives with her BSA Identifier. Both go in the folder with her 2025 statements.
What happens after you submit?
Two different references arrive, and they are easy to confuse. The tracking ID comes back immediately and confirms the upload was received. The BSA Identifier arrives later: FinCEN's instructions say that within two business days you receive an acknowledgement email confirming the FBAR has been processed, carrying a 14-digit BSA Identifier that begins 310000 and is unique to your filing.
Keep both, along with a copy of the report itself. FinCEN requires filers to retain, for five years, the name in which each account is maintained, the account number, the institution's name and address, the account type and its maximum value, and it notes that retaining a copy of the filed FBAR helps satisfy that requirement. The BSA Identifier is also what you will need if the report ever has to be corrected.
How do you amend an FBAR you already filed?
You do not edit the original; you replace it. FinCEN's instructions say that to amend an FBAR filed through the BSA E-Filing website you complete a new FBAR in full, check the Amend box in Item 1, and provide the Prior Report BSA Identifier from your acknowledgement email. Where the report was filed on paper or the identifier cannot be found, the instructions direct you to enter all zeroes, 00000000000000, in that field.
This is why filing on time with reasonable figures is better than waiting for perfect ones. A timely report you refine later is an ordinary amendment; a report that misses the FBAR deadline in 2026 is a late filing, which is a different conversation with different consequences.
Filing an FBAR for a child
Children are US persons in their own right, so a child with a UK account in their own name can have a filing requirement once the $10,000 threshold is crossed. FinCEN's instructions say that generally a child is responsible for filing their own FBAR, and that where the child cannot file for any reason, such as age, the child's parent, guardian or other legally responsible person must file it for them.
The mechanics are the same as any other individual filing, with one addition: where the child cannot sign, a parent or guardian signs electronically, and the instructions direct the signer to enter "Parent/Guardian filing for child" in the Filer Title field. Each child files a separate report under their own details, so a family with three children who each hold a junior account may be filing several reports rather than one.
Filing jointly with a spouse
Where both spouses are US persons and every account the non-filing spouse would report is jointly owned with the filer, one FBAR can cover both, provided they complete and sign Form 114a. Do not upload it. FinCEN's instructions say the 114a should not be sent to FinCEN and must be retained by the filers, and the upload page will not accept scanned documents in any case. If either spouse holds an account the other has no interest in, that exception fails and both file separately, each reporting the joint accounts in full.
When the system will not cooperate
- A blank screen or a "Please wait" message on the PDF route. FinCEN's instructions attribute this to the browser not opening the form directly in Adobe Reader. Install Adobe Reader, open it once to accept the licence agreement, and make it the default application for PDFs. The online route avoids Adobe Reader altogether.
- Validation errors you cannot interpret. Work through the highlighted fields one at a time; the most common causes are identifying numbers entered with dashes and missing institution addresses. The line item instructions cover each field.
- Questions about the rules rather than the software. FinCEN's Regulatory Helpline is 800-949-2732, or 703-905-3975 from outside the United States. Technical problems go to the BSA E-Filing Help Desk instead, and FinCEN asks filers not to include account numbers or taxpayer identification numbers in a support ticket.
Filing the FBAR is not the whole picture
The FBAR goes to FinCEN and covers accounts. Form 8938 goes to the IRS with your tax return, covers a broader set of assets and has much higher thresholds, and many Americans in the UK file both; our comparison of the FBAR and Form 8938 explains which applies to you. The IRS also confirms that you do not file the FBAR with your federal tax return. If earlier years are missing as well, filing this year alone does not resolve them, and the Streamlined Procedures are often the right route.
When to hand it to an adviser
A handful of bank accounts and clean statements is a job you can do yourself in an evening. The filing stops being clerical when a pension or trust interest has no obvious reportable value, when a stocks and shares ISA brings PFIC reporting into the return alongside the report, when you hold signature authority over business accounts, or when several years are outstanding at once.
US/UK Cross Border Tax is a team of US CPAs and UK tax advisers working as one team, in London, Manchester, New York and San Francisco. If you would rather not file FBAR online in 2026 yourself, we confirm which accounts are reportable, calculate each maximum value, file FinCEN Form 114 and keep the acknowledgements on file, alongside your US return. Our overview for Americans in the UK covers what else falls due each year, and you can ask us for a quote before the October deadline.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account to file an FBAR online?
No. FinCEN's BSA E-Filing System says there is no need to register to file the FBAR as an individual, provided you personally or jointly own the reportable account. Registration is for anyone filing on behalf of someone else, such as an attorney, CPA or enrolled agent, who must obtain an account and file as an institution rather than as an individual.
Should I use the online FBAR form or the PDF form?
The online form needs no Adobe Reader and is submitted in one sitting, which suits a straightforward filing you can finish today. The PDF form requires Adobe Reader but lets you work at your own pace, save as you go and reuse the form next year, which suits filers with many accounts or anyone who expects to be interrupted. Both produce the same FinCEN Form 114.
What confirmation do I get after filing an FBAR online?
FinCEN's electronic filing instructions say you should see an immediate confirmation screen with a tracking ID, and receive an email with the same tracking information. Within two business days a separate acknowledgement email confirms the FBAR has been processed and gives your BSA Identifier, a 14-digit number beginning 310000. Keep both, because the BSA Identifier is what you need to amend the report.
How do I correct a mistake on an FBAR I already filed?
You file again rather than editing the original. FinCEN's instructions say to complete a new FBAR in full, check the Amend box in Item 1 and enter your Prior Report BSA Identifier. If you filed on paper or cannot find the identifier, the instructions say to enter all zeroes, 00000000000000, in that field. There is no penalty attached to amending a timely filed report.
Why does the FBAR PDF open as a blank screen?
That is the classic Adobe Reader configuration problem. FinCEN's electronic filing instructions say the browser must be set to open the FBAR PDF directly in Adobe Reader as the default PDF viewer, and that otherwise you may get a blank screen or a message asking you to wait. Installing Adobe Reader, accepting its licence agreement and making it the default PDF application usually resolves it. The online form avoids the issue entirely.
Do I upload Form 114a when my spouse and I file one FBAR?
No. FinCEN's instructions are explicit that Form 114a, the Record of Authorization to Electronically File FBARs, should not be sent to FinCEN, and the upload page will not accept scanned images in any event. Both spouses complete and sign the 114a, and it is retained with your own records, ready to produce if FinCEN or the IRS asks for it.
