US/UK Cross-Border Tax
Advisors in Manchester
US and UK tax for US persons, cross-border contractors, and mobile professionals across the North of England, from our Manchester office.
Cross-Border Depth Beyond the Capital
Cross-border tax expertise in the UK has mostly sat in London, which left Americans and dual filers in the North choosing between a long-distance adviser and a local generalist. Our Manchester practice closes that gap. From our office on Brown Street in the city centre we serve US citizens across Greater Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, and the wider North West: remote employees of US companies, contractors with American clients working through IR35, and families with property and pensions on both sides of the Atlantic. One team handles the US return and the UK Self Assessment on every engagement, so foreign tax credits, payroll withholding, and deadlines in two systems are planned together rather than reconciled after the fact.
A Remote Employee on Two Payrolls
Case Study: Manchester Cross-Border Engagement
A British software engineer in Manchester took a remote job with a US technology company. The company kept him on its American payroll and withheld full US federal tax, while HMRC expected UK tax on the same salary.
Established that a UK-resident employee working from the UK is taxed first by HMRC, then filed Form W-4 adjustments and a US non-resident return (1040-NR) to recover the over-withheld federal tax.
Obtained a certificate of coverage under the US/UK Totalization Agreement so social security was paid once, into UK National Insurance, which ended the duplicate FICA withholding.
Restructured the arrangement through a UK employer-of-record with the US company, so PAYE withholding was correct going forward and the annual reclaim cycle stopped.

Cross-Border Technical Work
IR35 and the US Client Dimension
Off-payroll working rules interact badly with US-source contract income when nobody plans the two together.
A Manchester contractor working for a US client through a personal service company faces two regimes at once: the UK off-payroll working rules that determine whether income is taxed as employment, and the US rules that determine withholding and reporting on payments to a foreign contractor. We assess IR35 status, prepare the correct W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E so US clients do not impose 30% default withholding, apply the business profits article of the US/UK treaty, and structure the company so corporation tax, dividends, and salary work across both systems.
The US/UK Totalization Agreement
Social security should be paid once. The agreement decides where, and the paperwork makes it real.
The US/UK Totalization Agreement prevents dual social security taxation and lets contribution records in one country count toward benefit eligibility in the other. Employees seconded for under five years generally remain in their home system with a certificate of coverage. Self-employed individuals are covered where they reside. We obtain certificates from the SSA or HMRC, stop duplicate FICA or Class 2/4 National Insurance, and model how UK contribution years affect eventual US Social Security through the Windfall Elimination Provision rules that apply to foreign pensions.
Cross-Border Property Investors and Split-Year Moves
UK rental property on a US return, US property on a Self Assessment, and the mechanics of arrival and departure years.
Northern property yields attract investors on both sides of the Atlantic. A US person letting UK property reports it twice: on Schedule E with US depreciation rules, and on Self Assessment under the UK's restricted finance-cost regime, with foreign tax credits reconciling the difference. The Non-Resident Landlord Scheme governs withholding for owners abroad. In the year of a transatlantic move we apply the UK Statutory Residence Test split-year rules alongside US dual-status or full-year elections, and choose the combination that keeps the moving-year bill lowest in both countries.
Common Questions in Manchester
I work remotely from Manchester for a US company. Where do I pay tax?
If you are UK tax resident and physically working in the UK, your salary is primarily taxable in the UK, regardless of where the employer sits. The structure matters: a US payroll withholding American tax on a UK-based employee creates double withholding that must be unwound every year. Solutions range from W-4 and treaty adjustments to an employer-of-record or a UK entity, and social security should be settled once under the Totalization Agreement.
Does IR35 apply if my only client is in the United States?
The off-payroll rules can still apply, but when the client is wholly overseas with no UK connection, responsibility for determining status typically rests with your own company rather than the client. You must still assess the engagement properly, and the US side needs attention too: the correct W-8 form prevents default 30% US withholding on your invoices. We handle the determination and the treaty position together.
I am a US citizen buying rental property in the North West. What should I plan for?
The property enters two tax systems at once. The UK taxes the rental profit and, on sale, capital gains with a 60-day reporting deadline. The US taxes the same income with different depreciation rules and taxes the gain with a currency twist: a mortgage repaid when sterling has weakened can produce US-taxable exchange gain. Owning through a UK limited company is often attractive domestically but can be a costly structure for a US person. Take advice before completing, not after.
