Crypto Tax & Digital Asset Reporting

Tax reporting and IRS compliance for decentralized finance (DeFi), staking, NFTs, and large crypto portfolios.

Crypto Tax & Digital Asset Reporting

HIFO

Basis Optimization

Crypto markets move fast, but tax reporting still comes down to cost-basis tracking and characterization rules. Trading, yield farming, NFT sales, token swaps: the IRS treats each on-chain event as a potentially taxable transaction.

Our crypto tax practice turns raw blockchain data into a return you can defend. We reconcile large datasets across wallets, exchanges, and protocols, find every legitimate basis-optimization opportunity, and keep the reporting consistent with current IRS digital asset guidance.

Our Methodology

How we deliver this service.

A rigorous, phase-driven process ensures nothing is missed and every position is defensible.

01

Data Aggregation & Audit

We aggregate data from all exchange APIs and public wallet addresses (ETH, BTC, SOL) to create a unified transaction history.

02

Wallet Reconciliation

We separate internal transfers from taxable events, so 'self-to-self' movements between your own wallets are not taxed.

03

Basis Characterization

We characterize every on-chain event (staking, mining, airdrops, hard forks) according to current IRS Revenue Rulings.

04

Inventory Method Selection

We model FIFO, LIFO, and Specific Identification (HIFO) inventory methods to see which saves you the most.

05

Tax Exposure Modeling

We calculate current capital gains/losses and ordinary income, including wash-sale effects where the rules apply to your assets.

06

Final IRS Reporting

We prepare Form 8949 and Schedule D, with the required disclosures for reportable positions and foreign assets.

Getting staking and DeFi income characterized right.

DeFi Compliance

DeFi & Staking Optimization

Getting staking and DeFi income characterized right.

Yield farming and liquid staking raise hard characterization questions. Are your rewards ordinary income when received, or can tax be deferred until sale? The difference in liability can be large. We model the 'zero-cost basis' rules and manage the self-employment tax questions that professional validators face.

We also document the fair market value (FMV) behind each reward so the numbers hold up later. That matters in a volatile market: without it, you can end up paying tax on phantom gains from tokens that lost value shortly after the airdrop or reward hit your wallet.

Technical focus: Staking rewards (Rev. Rul. 2023-14), liquidity pool (LP) basis tracking, and DeFi loan interest characterization.

Why specific identification beats FIFO.

Inventory Methods

HIFO & Basis Optimization

Why specific identification beats FIFO.

Unlike traditional stocks, digital assets allow precise cost-basis tracking through Specific Identification. Using Highest-In-First-Out (HIFO) accounting, we sell the high-basis units first to offset gains, which usually produces a much lower reported liability than the standard FIFO method.

We keep the per-unit basis records that make this method defensible. If the IRS asks for your basis calculations, we hand over a wallet-to-wallet audit trail showing exactly which unit was sold and why the chosen basis is legally accurate.

Advantage focus: HIFO vs. FIFO modeling, specific unit identification (Lot tracking), and capital loss harvesting strategies.

NFTs, collectibles rates, and constructive sales.

Asset Compliance

NFTs & Constructive Sales

NFTs, collectibles rates, and constructive sales.

The IRS often treats NFT sales as 'collectibles', which can carry a higher maximum capital gains rate (28%). We characterize your collection transactions to identify which assets qualify for standard capital gains rates instead. We also watch for 'constructive sales' under IRC § 1259, so a hedging position doesn't trigger a tax event before you actually sell.

For creators and artists, we handle the self-employment tax reporting on royalties and secondary sales, and make sure business expenses are fully deducted against that income.

Innovation focus: Section 1259 constructive sales, collectible tax rates, NFT royalty reporting, and wash-sale rule monitoring.

Is your crypto reporting in order?

The IRS is paying close attention to digital assets, and generic software misses the hard cases. Get reporting that will stand up to a review.

What You Receive

Specific deliverables, precisely documented.

“The blockchain records what happened. How it gets taxed is a judgment call. We make sure that judgment is made carefully and documented.”

Form 8949 (Capital Gains)

Reporting of every acquisition and sale, reconciled wallet to exchange.

Cost Basis Audit Report

A report mapping the specific identification (HIFO) of every unit sold, kept for IRS audit defense.

Staking Income Analysis

Characterization of staking and DeFi rewards into ordinary income or capital property based on current guidance.

Foreign Asset Reporting (FBAR)

Filing FinCEN Form 114 for assets held on foreign exchanges and non-custodial wallet balances where required.

FATCA Compliance (Form 8938)

Disclosure of digital assets that meet the threshold on the Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets.

Business Income Reconciliations

Structuring digital asset revenue for businesses and web3 foundations to keep self-employment tax down.

Gift & Estate Valuation (Form 709)

Date-of-gift FMV calculations for digital assets passed to heirs or trusts.

Tax Exposure Forecasts

Ongoing modeling of potential tax liabilities to avoid underpayment penalties and manage cash flow.

Common Questions

Technical clarifications.

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about how this service works in practice.

Yes. The IRS treats the exchange of one digital asset for another (e.g., BTC for ETH) as a taxable sale of the first asset followed by a purchase of the second. This triggers a capital gain or loss based on your cost basis.

HIFO (Highest-In-First-Out) is a specific identification method that sells your most expensive units first. That maximizes your basis and minimizes your taxable gain. We keep the per-unit records required to use it legally.

Holding crypto is not a taxable event. You do have to answer the IRS digital asset question on Form 1040, and if the wallet earns staking rewards or interest, that income must be reported even if you never sell.

For artists, royalties are typically ordinary income subject to self-employment tax. For investors, secondary sales are capital gains/losses, often subject to the 28% collectibles rate. We help characterize these correctly.

We rebuild your history from blockchain explorers to establish acquisition dates and fair market values. Without that reconstruction, the IRS can assume a zero basis and tax the full proceeds.
